What is BI and where MSBI tools fits in industry?

BI stands for Business intelligence and which is a set of tools that converts raw data into understandable/Readable format which can be Reports/Dash boards/Plans/Scoreboards/ Excel workbooks to explain business.

Microsoft has released set of tools by the name of MSBI tools which are SSIS (SQL Server integration Services), SSAS (SQL server Analysis services) and SSRS (SQL server Reporting services)
Below mentioned example explains where MSBI tools are used.
Let us take XYZ Tires Company is having many distribution centers across India. Every distribution centre sells tires in certain amount every month. Each distribution centre saves their daily selling data (Transactional data-OLTP) in their receptive available database which can be either flat file or excel sheet or any other data base SQL server, Oracle, DB2.
After storing their transactional data, each centre sends their data to centralized location. All the data will then be integrated in required format and saved in to centralized database which holds all transaction data from all distribution centers.
This integration will be done using the tool SSIS. Integration means getting data from different sources transform into required format and load into centralized data base or data warehouse. This is step1.
In the next step, Analyze the centralized data and create Data marts from the data which will be done using the tool SSAS.
It is the On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP). SSAS allows you to build multidimensional structures called Cubes to pre-calculate and store complex aggregations, and also to build mining models to perform data analysis to identify valuable information like trends, patterns, relationships etc. This is step2.
Last step is representing the data in understandable/Readable format to higher level organization. This format can be reports, Dash boards or Excel. This will be done using the tool SSRS. This is step3.
SSRS develops the reports either from Cubes which are created in second step2 or centralized data base which is loaded in step1 if data base is small.
By using these reports Organization will take below decisions
  • take better decision based up on these reports
  • can forecast their sales
  • Come to know revenue or sales done in any period
Below Diagram explains the same graphically
